The {Wednesday} Weekend Lineup: 8/24/2016

I don’t know about you, but sometime right around Wednesday at quitting time, a crazy feeling of euphoria washes over me and I suddenly find myself thinking:

The Weekend.

The Weekend.

The Weekend.

My mind whirls into hyperdrive, scheming how to spend Friday, Saturday and Sunday squeezing every last drop of fun out of the hours.

That’s why I’m introducing a new feature over here at Star City Slicker:  the {Wednesday} Weekend Lineup.  Each week, halfway through Hump Day, I’ll post a quick list of links to events I’m considering attending, right here in the Star City.  If I’m lucky, a few of my favorite in-the-know readers will contribute some of their own plans to the comments feed, and the next thing I know, I’ll have more fun stuff to do than … well, than I know what to do with.

So without further ado, here’s what’s on my Weekend Lineup so far:

Rooftop Riot – Center in the Square – Thursday, August 25, 6-10 p.m.

I know.  I know.  Thursday is *not* the weekend.

Or is it?

Let’s just say that tomorrow, I plan to have a glass of something sparkly in hand while I enjoy this week’s pitch-perfect late-summer breezes and the rooftop view from Center in the Square.

The event is open to the public (21+), and has all the elements to make for a fun, relaxing introduction to the weekend:  a cash bar, musical entertainment, a sunset city vista, and a very affordable cover ($5).  Click the link above for more information.

Salem Red Sox vs. Frederick Keys – LewisGale Field – Friday, August 26 at 7:05 p.m.

Few things sing “Summer” like local baseball, which is why I can’t wait to hang with a few special friends when they take me out to the ballgame on Friday night.

(There might or might not be a significant amount of burger-noshing involved, too).

Fireworks.  Food.  Sports.  Sips.  Ah, Summer …  What’s not to like?  Hope to see you there!

Parks & Arts – Elmwood Park – Saturday, August 27, 12-3 p.m.

I can’t stop talking about this weekend’s Parks & Arts event, when the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra will perform for *free,* for any takers, outdoors in the sunshine on a Saturday afternoon.

(Honestly — I can’t think of a better way to spend the day.)

The Upscale Band & Show will open the event at noon, followed by the RSO taking the stage at 1:30.  Their Symphonic Pops lineup includes music by crowdpleasers like George Gershwin, Aaron Copland, and of course, the inimitable John Williams.

Best of all?  The event coincides perfectly with the Deschutes Brewery Street Pub — also at Elmwood Park & S. Jefferson Street — starting at 2 p.m.

So, about that …

Deschutes Brewery Street Pub – Elmwood Park & S. Jefferson – Saturday, August 27, 2-10 p.m.

I couldn’t be more excited to support Deschutes’ arrival here in the Star City, and this family-friendly block party is the perfect kickoff for me.  The brewery will offer 50 taps and food pairings by Executive Chef Jeff Usinowicz and local chefs Aaron Deal (River & Rail) and Jeff Farmer (Fortunato).

As if things couldn’t get much better, beer proceeds benefit a long list of local charities and community organizations.  Click on the link above, read more … And then meet me there for a pint!

So what about you, Slickers?  What are *you* into this weekend??
