内容摘要:

Ultraviolet (UV) communication uses UV-C (200 – 280 nm) lights as the information carrier and transmits UV signals to the receiver through scattering. Abundant atmospheric absorption and scattering of UV-C wavelengths endow UV communication with the capacity for non-line-of-sight (NLOS) and low-probability-of-detection wireless communication, thereby providing remarkable terrain adaptability and enhancing local security. The scattering-based transmission mode also grants UV communication robust resilience to varying weather conditions. These inherent advantages render NLOS UV communications with substantial potential for diverse applications, including military secure networking and industrial Internet of Things. This talk will explain the characteristics of UV communication, its coverage estimation model, and the effect of different weather conditions on communication coverage. Recent experimental results on NLOS UV communication will also be presented.

 

主讲人简历:

Julian Cheng received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB, Canada. He is a Full Professor in the School of Engineering, Faculty of Applied Science, at The University of British Columbia, Okanagan campus in Kelowna, BC, Canada. His research interests include applications of deep learning for wireless communication systems and wireless networks, and optical wireless communications. Dr. Cheng has been a technical program committee member for many IEEE conferences and workshops. He co-chaired the 12th Canadian Workshop on Information Theory (CWIT 2011) in Kelowna, Canada. He also co-chaired the 2021 Communication Theory Workshop. He served as an Area Editor for IEEE Transactions on Communications (2018-2023). Previously, he was an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Communications, IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications, and IEEE Communications Letters. He was a past Guest Editor for a special issue of the IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications on optical wireless communications. He also served as the President of the Canadian Society of Information Theory (2017-2021). From 2022 to 2023, he was a Visiting Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University. Dr. Cheng has recently been elected to serve as the Chair of the Radio Communications Committee of the IEEE Communication Society. He is also a Fellow of IEEE.
